Corn is a simple, healthy side dish that comes together in just minutes. To amp up its flavor without using butter or salt, check your pantry or fridge for the toppings listed below.

Ingredients

  • 1 large ear corn
  • Toppings (optional—see below)

Preparation

Bring a large pot of water to boil. Shuck the corn, making sure all silk strands have been removed.

Boil until bright yellow, about 4 or 5 minutes. Remove from water carefully and drain.

Once the corn is dry, try adding one of these flavorful toppings. Or, experiment with your favorite spice or herb blend.

  • Everything bagel seasoning
  • A dollop of pesto
  • Chimichurri, an herb- and garlic-based sauce often used in South American cooking
  • Salsa
  • Chili crisp
  • Harissa, a North African chili paste often found in Middle Eastern cuisine
  • Sriracha, a type of chili sauce
  • Low-sodium soy or teriyaki sauce
  • Guacamole
  • A little bit of salt and cayenne or chili powder, spread on the corn with a slice of lime
